How to dictate in Messages on iPhone

Texting is the app you type in most, which makes it the app where speaking saves you the most. Say the message; send clean, punctuated text.

Messages is where most iPhone typing happens: quick replies while walking, longer catch-ups while cooking, group threads that move faster than thumbs can. Wisper Field turns all of it into talking: you speak naturally, and polished text lands in the iMessage text field, ready to send.

Unlike the built-in mic, Wisper Field cleans up what you say as you say it: filler words disappear, punctuation lands where it belongs, and names you use all the time come out spelled right.

Set up in three steps

  1. Install Wisper Field

Download the app from the App Store and follow the short setup: add the Wisper Field keyboard in Settings and allow Full Access so dictation works.

  2. Switch to the keyboard

In any app, touch and hold the globe key and pick Wisper Field. iOS remembers your choice, so you only do this once.

  3. Tap the mic and talk

Open Messages, tap the text field, and tap the mic on the Wisper Field keyboard. The app opens for a second to start recording. Swipe back and just talk. Your words stream in as you speak; tap send when you're done.

Why voice beats typing in Messages

Faster than thumbs

You can say a reply far faster than you can thumb-type it. Long replies that used to get postponed ("I'll answer properly later") get said and sent in one go.

Punctuation without thinking

Question marks, commas, and full stops appear where they belong. No more one-line texts that read like a run-on sentence.

Hands busy, thread moving

Walking, cooking, carrying a bag: tap the mic once and keep the conversation going without stopping what you're doing.

Names come out right

Add friends' names and your usual places to your personal dictionary once, and dictation stops mangling them forever.

Tips for Messages

Say the emotion, keep it natural

Casual tone fits texting. Wisper Field keeps your phrasing natural rather than making you sound like a formal email.

Use snippets for the things you always send

"On my way", your address, your usual coffee order. Save each as a snippet and just say its trigger; the full text types itself.

Fix a word without retyping

If one word lands wrong, just correct that word. The rest of your message stays put.

Frequently asked questions

Does Wisper Field work in iMessage group chats?

Yes. Wisper Field is a keyboard, so it works anywhere Messages shows a text field: one-to-one chats, group threads, and replies.

Why does tapping the mic open the Wisper Field app?

Keyboard extensions on iOS aren't allowed to record audio, so the mic has to live in the app. Tapping the key opens Wisper Field just long enough to start recording. Swipe back to Messages and talk, and your words stream into the text field as you speak.

Is it better than the built-in iPhone dictation mic?

The built-in mic transcribes what you say literally. Wisper Field also cleans it up: filler words removed, punctuation added, your personal dictionary applied, so the message is ready to send without editing.

What does it cost?

Texting by voice is free up to 1,000 words a week. If your threads chew through that, Wisper Field Pro goes unlimited: $12/month billed annually, or $15 month-to-month.
